THE AMLINELLIAD/OUTLINE WALES

Drought Image

Introduction

Amlinelliad/Outline is an innovative, bilingual app being developed by the charity Art+Science in collaboration with Aberystwyth University. It offers users an immersive experience through augmented reality (AR) artworks, which can be explored along the scenic Wales Coast Path using a mobile device.

Wales is one of the few countries in the world to feature a walking path encircling its entire coastline, spanning 870 miles of breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse ecosystems. Amlinelliad/Outline capitalises on this unique setting to connect users to the cultural and natural heritage of Wales, blending cutting-edge technology with stories, myths, and legends.

The app will create a series of virtual, site-specific, geo-located artworks that are visible or audible only at specific points along the coastline. These include images, films, sculptures, poems, and performances, each addressing key themes such as sea level rise, landscape change, history, legend, and a sense of belonging to a place. By doing so, the project brings to life the environmental and cultural significance of the Welsh coastline.

Amlinelliad/Outline aims to encourage the public to explore areas they might not typically visit while showcasing the majesty and dynamism of the evolving Welsh coastline. Beyond this, the vision of the project is to lay the foundation for a national digital collection—a groundbreaking initiative that could serve as the first of its kind in the world.

This project not only enhances public appreciation of Wales' coastal beauty but also fosters deeper reflection on issues such as climate change, heritage preservation, and the human connection to the place.

Aim and Objectives

Aim

To connect people with the cultural, natural, and environmental heritage of Wales through site-specific augmented reality (AR) artworks along the Wales Coast Path.

Objectives

  • Develop a bilingual app showcasing geo-located AR artworks such as images, films, and poems.
  • Encourage exploration of lesser-known areas along the Welsh coastline.
  • Address themes like climate change, history, and cultural belonging.
  • Lay the groundwork for a national digital collection of artworks.
  • Promote accessibility and the Welsh language through inclusive design.

Expected Impact

SHORT-TERM IMPACTS

  • Increase public awareness of Welsh culture, heritage, and environmental issues.
  • Boost local tourism and support coastal communities.

MEDIUM-TERM IMPACTS

  • Showcase Wales as a leader in blending art, technology, and storytelling.
  • Inspire environmental stewardship through immersive, site-specific experiences.

LONG-TERM IMPACTS

  • Position Wales as a pioneer in digital cultural initiatives.

Objectives

The project seeks to revive and celebrate the memory of Wales’ rich history and folklore while inspiring awareness and action toward climate change. Over time, additional locations will be added, with a vision to outline the entire Wales Coast Path.

Location

  • Ceredigion Coast: Between Borth and Ynys Las.
  • Colwyn Bay: Near the Rainbow Bridge.
  • Pembrokeshire Coast: At the Iron Age fort of Garn Fawr.

OUR APPROACH

Through the power of storytelling, myths, and ideas, we blend history with technology. By using augmented reality to render these narratives visible and audible in their natural landscapes, we create a dynamic connection between past and present, culture and environment.
