Amlinelliad/Outline is an innovative, bilingual app being developed by the charity Art+Science in collaboration with Aberystwyth University. It offers users an immersive experience through augmented reality (AR) artworks, which can be explored along the scenic Wales Coast Path using a mobile device.
Wales is one of the few countries in the world to feature a walking path encircling its entire coastline, spanning 870 miles of breathtaking landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and diverse ecosystems. Amlinelliad/Outline capitalises on this unique setting to connect users to the cultural and natural heritage of Wales, blending cutting-edge technology with stories, myths, and legends.
The app will create a series of virtual, site-specific, geo-located artworks that are visible or audible only at specific points along the coastline. These include images, films, sculptures, poems, and performances, each addressing key themes such as sea level rise, landscape change, history, legend, and a sense of belonging to a place. By doing so, the project brings to life the environmental and cultural significance of the Welsh coastline.
Amlinelliad/Outline aims to encourage the public to explore areas they might not typically visit while showcasing the majesty and dynamism of the evolving Welsh coastline. Beyond this, the vision of the project is to lay the foundation for a national digital collection—a groundbreaking initiative that could serve as the first of its kind in the world.
This project not only enhances public appreciation of Wales' coastal beauty but also fosters deeper reflection on issues such as climate change, heritage preservation, and the human connection to the place.

Amlinelliad/Outline is more than an app—it is a bridge between culture, technology, and environmental awareness. By using augmented reality (AR) to showcase site-specific artworks, it deepens connections to the Welsh coastline’s history, heritage, and ecology. Tourism is vital for rural economies, yet many coastal areas in Wales remain overlooked. This project encourages exploration through immersive AR experiences, attracting visitors while supporting local businesses. It also engages younger audiences by blending heritage with cutting-edge technology—key to keeping future generations connected to these areas.
By embedding creative storytelling into the landscape, Amlinelliad/Outline sparks reflection on climate change and coastal erosion, using art to ignite meaningful climate conversations. Beyond its immediate impact, it lays the foundation for a national digital collection, positioning Wales as a global leader in digital cultural initiatives.
This artwork explores the dramatic environmental shifts that have shaped the Welsh coastline. Six thousand years ago, the land around Borth and Ynys Las was a dry forested region, home to oak, pine, alder, and birch. As sea levels rose, these forests were submerged, giving rise to Cardigan Bay’s current landscape. The legendary tale of Cantre’r Gwaelod, a mythical sunken kingdom, is believed to have emerged from these changes. Tree brings this hidden history to life, reminding viewers of the lasting impact of climate change.
This artwork uses VR to revive the memory of Hotel 70 Degrees, an iconic yet unusual hotel that once overlooked Colwyn Bay. Built with dramatic 70- and 100-degree angles, it exuded glamour and stood as a striking landmark. The piece reconstructs the building’s presence, offering a glimpse into the past and reflecting on how places shape our experiences.
Set in the Iron Age fort of Garn Fawr, this poem reflects on the transformation of rural communities. The artist recalls witnessing the same landscape for decades, but with a significant change—where there were once glowing lights in farmhouse windows, there is now only darkness. As traditional homes become seasonal holiday rentals, communities are being displaced, and local heritage is fading. Garn Fawr highlights the impact of these shifts on Welsh identity and the connection to place.
As the project grows, additional artworks will be integrated along the Wales Coast Path, using technology to transform myths, stories, and environmental themes into immersive experiences.
Our contributions spanned multiple key areas, ensuring the app delivered an engaging and immersive augmented reality experience along the Wales Coast Path.
We conducted market research, identifying target audiences and refining engagement strategies. Our expertise in UX/UI design helped shape an intuitive and visually appealing user experience. Through focus group discussions (FGDs), we gathered insights to optimise the app’s functionality and impact.
Beyond research and design, we played a pivotal role in project management, coordinating efforts to keep the project on track. Our team also led visual content creation and executed a targeted social media campaign, increasing awareness and engagement.
Additionally, we managed app testing and documentation, ensuring a seamless user experience and capturing insights for future development.
Omeva Consulting’s strategic approach supported the charity Art+Science in successfully integrating art and technology, driving the project’s innovation and outreach.
Through the power of storytelling, myths, and ideas, we merge history with technology. By using augmented reality to render these narratives visible and audible in their natural landscapes, we create a dynamic connection between past and present, culture and environment.
This project has successfully been completed achieving every set goal in place. For more information on this project, please contact info@omevaconsulting.com or maria@omevaconsulting.com.
